A Parent's Guide to Hyde Park Village: How We'd Spend the Perfect Day
If you've lived in Tampa for any amount of time, you've probably found yourself saying, "Let's just go to Hyde Park."
Not because you have a specific plan.
Just because it's one of those places that always sounds like a good idea.
Maybe you're meeting friends for brunch. Maybe you have family visiting from out of town. Maybe the kids have been cooped up all week and everyone needs a change of scenery. Or maybe you simply want somewhere beautiful to wander with a coffee in hand.
Whatever brings you there, Hyde Park Village has a way of slowing you down.
It's one of the few places in Tampa where running errands somehow turns into an afternoon you'll actually remember.
Start Slow
If we were planning the perfect day, we'd start early.
Weekends can get busy, but the Village has a completely different feel before the crowds arrive. The sidewalks are quiet, the shops are just opening, and it's the perfect excuse to grab a coffee before deciding where the day will take you.
Buddy Brew Coffee is always a favorite, but honestly, the best part isn't the coffee itself. It's finding a shady spot outside, watching the Village wake up, and realizing nobody is in a hurry.
As parents, those moments are rare.
Let the Kids Set the Pace
One of the things we love most about Hyde Park Village is that it doesn't feel like a typical shopping center.
Children aren't rushing from one store to another.
They're watching the fountains.
Peeking into shop windows.
Pointing out dogs walking by.
Stopping every few minutes because they've discovered something interesting.
And somehow, that's exactly what makes the experience enjoyable.
Sometimes the best family outings aren't packed with activities. They're simply places where everyone enjoys being together.
Browse Without an Agenda
Of course, there are plenty of great shops.
You can pop into Anthropologie, browse LoveShackFancy, or make a bracelet at The Little Words Project.
But don't feel like you need a shopping list.
Some of our favorite visits have ended with nothing more than a coffee, a long walk, and maybe a small treat on the way home.
Where We'd Eat
This is where Hyde Park Village really shines.
Whether you're bringing the kids or planning a date night, there are so many great options.
Forbici is one of our go-to recommendations because it's hard to go wrong with fresh pizza and homemade pasta.
If you're looking for something a little more elevated, On Swann has become a Tampa favorite for good reason. It's the kind of place that reminds you why making time for lunch or dinner together is worth it.
And if tacos are calling your name, bartaco is always a solid choice. It's casual, lively, and one of those restaurants where families never feel out of place.
Don't Skip the Neighborhood
Here's a little local tip.
After you've explored the Village, take a walk through the surrounding Hyde Park neighborhood.
The tree-lined streets, historic homes, and brick roads are part of what makes this area so special. It's one of our favorite places in Tampa to simply wander without a destination.
Every season feels a little different.
Spring brings blooming flowers.
Fall evenings are perfect for a stroll.
And during the holidays, the neighborhood lights make the entire area feel magical.
Make It a Date Instead
As much as we love Hyde Park Village with kids, we'll let you in on a little secret.
It's even better when you don't have them.
One of the things we hear from parents all the time is that they miss doing simple things together.
Browsing a bookstore.
Having a long lunch.
Walking without pushing a stroller.
Ordering dessert because no one is asking to leave.
Sometimes reconnecting doesn't require a weekend away.
Sometimes it just looks like an afternoon in Hyde Park.
Our Favorite Way to Spend Three Hours
If a friend asked us how to spend the perfect afternoon at Hyde Park Village, here's exactly what we'd recommend:
Arrive before 10:00 a.m. and grab coffee from Buddy Brew.
Wander through the Village without rushing.
Browse a few favorite shops.
Take a walk through the surrounding Hyde Park neighborhood.
Enjoy lunch at Forbici or On Swann.
Finish with something sweet before heading home.
Simple.
Relaxed.
Exactly the kind of day you'll want to do again.
Why We Keep Coming Back
Working with families across Westchase, Carrollwood, South Tampa, Lutz, Odessa, Wesley Chapel, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg means we hear about a lot of great places.
Hyde Park Village comes up again and again.
Not because it's the biggest attraction in Tampa.
Because it's one of the places where life feels just a little slower.
Where conversations last longer.
Where kids have room to explore.
And where parents get to enjoy the day too.
That's pretty special.
Local Parent Tip 🤍
If you're visiting on a weekend, arrive before 10:00 a.m. for easier parking and a quieter atmosphere. If it's your first visit, leave time to explore the surrounding Hyde Park neighborhood. It's just as charming as the Village itself.
